A sequencing approach targeting the 16S rRNA gene unravels the biofilm composition of spiral-wound membranes used in the dairy industry

Abstract: Few data are available concerning the composition of biofilms found at the surface of filtration membranes, which, to some extent, explains the long-term failure of numerous strategies developed to control biofouling. This preliminary study intended to design a metagenomic tool targeting the 16S rRNA gene in order to unravel a general portrait of bacterial communities found on spiral-wound membranes used in the dairy industry. A total of seven spiral-wound membrane elements (ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, or… Show more

However, from 1991 to 2000, there was a sharp decrease both in milk production due to a reduction in cattle heads in the public sector of livestock farming and reducing the productivity [1][2][3]. The implementation of the Russia Food Security Doctrine adopted in 2010 is the main direction of ensuring national security in the country.…”

“…The former method samples all organisms, and the latter samples only organisms that are culturable; therefore, it leaves out viable but not culturable organisms. Next, researchers use primers homologous to portions of the 16S rRNA gene to amplify the DNA via polymerase chain reactions (PCR) [ 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 ]. The amplified DNA is then sequenced, and the sequences are processed, after which organisms can be identified using databases, such as EzTaxon [ 21 ] or NCBI Blast [ 53 ].…”
