A Sensitive Response Index Selection for Rapid Assessment of Heavy Metals Toxicity to the Photosynthesis of Chlorella pyrenoidosa Based on Rapid Chlorophyll Fluorescence Induction Kinetics

Abstract: Heavy metals as toxic pollutants have important impacts on the photosynthesis of microalgae, thus seriously threatening the normal material circulation and energy flow of the aquatic ecosystem. In order to rapidly and sensitively detect the toxicity of heavy metals to microalgal photosynthesis, in this study, the effects of four typical toxic heavy metals, chromium (Cr(VI)), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and copper (Cu), on nine photosynthetic fluorescence parameters (φPo, ΨEo, φEo, δRo, ΨRo, φRo, FV/FO, PIABS, … Show more

“…The drop in TR O /ABS indicates that the light use efficiency of PSII RCs is lowered by Cd stress [39,65]. PI ABS , a comprehensive performance index of PSII [25,58,66], is a more sensitive response index than TR O /ABS in quantitatively detecting the toxicity of heavy metals [67]. In this study, PI ABS was more sensitive than TR O /ABS to Cd stress.…”

“…Root cutting induced changes in OJIP curve of A. ordosica leaves Rapid ChlF can be an effective tool for monitoring the photosynthetic physiological status of plants under various environmental stresses, such as salt stress (Zushi and Matsuzoe, 2017), drought stress (Erdal and Ekmekci, 2023), and heavy metal stress (Gan et al, 2023), among others, in several plant species. OJIP transient detection technology, as a non-destructive, simple, and fast detection method, is widely used to evaluate the degree of damage to photosynthetic organs under various environmental stresses (Kalaji et al, 2016).…”

“…Furthermore, toxicological studies also incorporated additional test endpoints, such as chlorophyll content [ 10 , 13 , 14 ], enzyme activities [ 15 , 16 ], colony size [ 17 , 18 ] and root length [ 19 , 20 ]. More recently, as an emerging non-invasive technique, the chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) induction method has also been increasingly utilized in various plant- and algae-based ecotoxicological studies [ 21 , 22 , 23 ].…”
