“…Generally, participation in relevant trade-specific communities of practice is seen as a vital component of general learning processes in VET (Bøje et al 2014;Poortman et al 2013;Fuller and Unwin 2013) as well as of safety learning more specifically (Grytnes 2017;Gherardi and Nicolini 2002;Nielsen 2012). Integrating knowledge, skills, and attitudes is central to the aim of both school-based and company-based components of VET (Billett 2008;Schaap et al 2012;Berner 2010;Zitter et al 2016).…”

“…In order to illuminate the daily practices and the different local knowledges in play in the construction of site safety cooperation, we used ethnographic methods (Spradley 1980, Pink et al 2012. In construction research these methods have been applied in different ways (Thiel 2007, Baarts 2009, Tutt et al 2013, L€ owstedt 2015, Grytnes 2018, Jia et al 2019 but the common characteristic is that the researcher to some extent takes part in the research field studied, and does that from a certain position; a specific role offered him or heroften as apprentice or visitor but it could also be as a researcher unskilled in the work done. For this particular study, the first and the last author conducted the fieldwork, and were sometimes at site together, sometimes one at the time.…”

“…Formal safety rules aiming at directing safety behaviour can stand in contrast to the ways in which work environment and safety are practiced (Thiel 2007, Tharaldsen and Haukelid 2009, Tutt et al 2013, L€ owstedt 2015, Ozmec et al 2015. Often regulations do not match the craftsmen's experience of, for example: how plans are negotiated to meet different demands; how a sense of security is established in practical work; or how work practice is characterized (Pedersen 2012, Bourrier and Bieder 2013, L€ owstedt 2015, Grytnes 2018). Wilson's description from 1989 of the difference between "mechanic" and "organic" organizations still holds relevance here (Wilson 1989).…”

“…In contrast to these points, it can be seen that the evolution occurred did not meet the evolutionary needs that this sector possesses, considering that it is a segment strongly discriminated by the use of tools still devoid of technologies, as well as the use of hand of low-skilled work, which limits the expansion in relation to the other sectors. Thus, the activities of carpentry and locksmithing, in its expressive majority is developed by micro-enterprises, with limited resources (LIPKUS et al, 2005;CAMPO et al, 2010;BRUTTO;REICH;ZAMBRANO, 2013;GRYTNES, 2017).…”
