Dickeya species (formerly Erwinia chrysanthemi) cause diseases on numerous crop and ornamental plants world‐wide. Dickeya spp. (probably D. dianthicola) were first reported on potato in the Netherlands in the 1970s and have since been detected in many other European countries. However, since 2004–5 a new pathogen, with the proposed name ‘D. solani’, has been spreading across Europe via trade in seed tubers and is causing increasing economic losses. Although disease symptoms are often indistinguishable from those of the more established blackleg pathogen Pectobacterium spp., Dickeya spp. can initiate disease from lower inoculum levels, have a greater ability to spread through the plant’s vascular tissue, are considerably more aggressive, and have higher optimal temperatures for disease development (the latter potentially leading to increased disease problems as Europe’s climate warms). However, they also appear to be less hardy than Pectobacterium spp. in soil and other environments outside the plant. Scotland is currently the only country in Europe to enforce zero tolerance for Dickeya spp. in its potato crop in an attempt to keep its seed tuber industry free from disease. However, there are a number of other ways to control the disease, including seed tuber certification, on‐farm methods and the use of diagnostics. For diagnostics, new genomics‐based approaches are now being employed to develop D. dianthicola‐ and ‘D. solani’‐specific PCR‐based tests for rapid detection and identification. It is hoped that these diagnostics, together with other aspects of ongoing research, will provide invaluable tools and information for controlling this serious threat to potato production.

Introducción. La pudrición blanda en los cultivos es causada por un grupo de bacterias capaces de secretar enzimas que degradan la pectina de la pared celular de las plantas y ocasionan pérdidas económicas importantes en la agricultura a nivel mundial. En Costa Rica existe poca información acerca de la distribución, hospederos y diversidad genética de los agentes causales de esta enfermedad. Objetivo. Identificar la presencia de bacterias causantes de pudrición blanda en hortalizas de la zona de Cartago y Alajuela con análisis moleculares, enzimáticos y técnicas de patogenicidad. Materiales y métodos. El estudio se llevó a cabo entre julio y octubre de 2017 en Cartago y Alajuela, Costa Rica. Se recolectaron plantas con síntomas de pudrición blanda en: chile dulce (Capcicum annum), hojas y bulbos de cebolla (Allium cepa), plantas de zucchini (Cucurbita pepo), frutos de tomate (Solanum lycopersicum) y plantas de papa (Solanum tuberosum). Se realizaron aislamientos bacterianos en un medio selectivo de cristal violeta y pectato (CVP). Se efectuaron ensayos de reacción hipersensible (RH), los aislamientos se inocularon en hojas de chile dulce y se llevaron a cabo pruebas de patogenicidad (postulados de Koch) para las bacterias positivas. Los aislamientos se identificaron molecularmente mediante el gen ARN-Ribosomal 16S. Resultados. Se aislaron cinco bacterias con actividad pectinolítica: Pt1-A, 6-M2, Ech2A, CfspA y Cfsab. Según el análisis de patogenicidad, las cepas CfspA, Cfsab y Ech2A fueron causantes de pudrición blanda en chile. No se logró reproducir los síntomas en cebolla y papa. De acuerdo con la identificación molecular, las cepas CfspA y Cfsab se clasificaron dentro del clado de Pectobacterium carotovorum, mientras que Ech2A se clasificó como Raoultella terrigena. Conclusión. Las bacterias Raoultella terrigena y Pectobacterium carotovorum se consideraron los agentes causales de pudrición blanda del chile en las zonas de Cartago y Alajuela, respectivamente.

The EFSA Panel on Plant Health conducted a pest risk assessment for Dickeya dianthicola for the EU territory under the scenario of current EU plant health legislation and identified and evaluated risk reduction options. The probability of entry was considered low for carnation cuttings and mother plants because association of D. dianthicola with carnation is rare nowadays. Probability of entry was considered higher for other host plants for planting that are not subject to statutory control. However, this pathogen already occurs in these crops in the EU, and its transfer from them to carnation is unlikely. The probability of establishment is high in the open field but low in protected crops. The probability of spread is moderate in the open field but low in protected crops. Under current phytosanitary measures, but with voluntary certification and sanitation practices in place, consequences for carnation are minimal since no carnation crop losses have been reported in the last 25 years. The risk reduction options with best effectiveness and feasibility are those addressing the sanitary status of the propagation material. However, although the prevalence of D. dianthicola on carnation is low at present, current EU measures appear to have some potential weaknesses, particularly because of lack of details on the testing of mother plants. If the current regulation were to be removed, no major consequences or changes in the potential impact of D. dianthicola are expected provided the current general hygiene practices applied in the European voluntary certification schemes are maintained. If, on the other hand, the current legislation were removed and a voluntary certification scheme was not maintained, contamination of carnation crops by D. dianthicola is expected, with ensuing detrimental effects. Additional risk reduction options to reduce the probability of entry, establishment, spread and impact were identified. Uncertainties on the assessment are discussed.
