A semantic interoperability approach to health‐care data: Resolving data‐level conflicts

Abstract: The integration of data from various electronic health record (EHR) systems presents a critical conflict in the sharing and exchanging of patient information across a diverse group of health‐oriented organizations. Patient health records in each system are annotated with ontologies utilizing different health‐care standards, creating ontology conflicts both at the schema and data levels. In this study, we introduce the concept of semantic ontology mapping for the facilitation and interoperability of heterogeneo… Show more

“…The process of constructing the composite process services was done manually by the administrator. In another previous work [ 41 ], we aimed to resolve the data-level conflicts of distributed local ontologies extracted from heterogeneous EHR systems. We proposed the Semantic Bridge Ontology to generate mapping rules used to transform local ontology instances into common ontology instances to generate linked-patient data.…”

“…This section illustrates an example of WS as shown in Table 1 . These services extended from our previous work [ 40 , 41 ] and were developed for retrieval of healthcare data from heterogeneous Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems of different health organizations. The operations were created in both SOAP WS and RESTful WS versions, which return healthcare data in XML format.…”

“…Standardization of information and patient data must be complemented by the use of semantic technologies, which utilize existing domain knowledge for querying databases [73,78]. Operating on the definitions and relations of metadata, a semantic enrichment will allow to access and screen databases in novel ways.…”
