Developing context-aware intelligent mobile user interfaces is one of the ambitious goals of pervasive computing. One of the most promising candidate domains for using such interfaces is the healthcare domain. Healthcare personnel normally work all day long in many different contexts and thus, they need intelligent mobile user interfaces that can adapt to different contexts to help them perform their tasks efficiently and effectively without errors. Current research studies in the literature address aspects of this problem with no clear plan of how the different components may be integrated and specifically how adaptation rules and preferences can be developed, updated and managed. Thus, this paper presents a comprehensive framework that integrates several different functionalities to guide the development of intelligent mobile user interfaces with varying levels of complexity as required. The framework provides a definition of context that separates the system view and the complexity of context acquisition from the user view. It represents both context and adaptable mobile features in the form of a set of parameters and objects to facilitate the task of defining and modifying preferences for interface adaptation based on context. The framework considers both user-defined preferences and system generated ones based on usage analysis. Preferences are represented in different ways to help in handling inconsistencies and incompleteness. Storing user profiles and preferences on the cloud makes it possible for users to select stereotype preferences or to search for preferences of users with similar profiles. It also enables sharing preferences among applications and mobile devices and the automated update of stereotype preferences. Though this framework is general-purpose, it has been developed with an eye towards healthcare applications. Thus, its salient features have been tested empirically among healthcare personnel to assess their effectiveness and acceptability in this domain.

Recently practical approaches for development of ubiquitous semantic applications have made quite some progress. In particular in the area of the ubiquitous access to the semantic data the authors recently observed a large number of approaches, systems and applications being described in the literature. With this survey the authors aim to provide an overview on the rapidly emerging field of Ubiquitous Semantic Applications (UbiSA). The authors conducted a systematic literature review comprising a thorough analysis of 48 primary studies out of 172 initially retrieved papers. The authors obtained a comprehensive set of quality attributes for UbiSA together with corresponding application features suggested for their realization. The quality attributes include aspects such as mobility, usability, heterogeneity, collaboration, customizability and evolvability. The primary studies were surveyed in the light of these quality attributes and the authors performed a thorough analysis of five ubiquitous semantic applications, six frameworks for UbiSA, three UbiSA specific ontologies, five ubiquitous semantic systems and nine general approaches. The proposed quality attributes facilitate the evaluation of existing approaches and the development of novel, more effective and intuitive UbiSA.

Mobile phones enable us to carry out a wider range of tasks every day, and as a result they have become more ubiquitous than ever. However, they are still more limited in terms of processing power and interaction capabilities than traditional computers, and the often distracting and time-constricted scenarios in which we use them do not help in alleviating these limitations. Context-awareness is a valuable technique to address these issues, as it enables to adapt application behaviour to each situation. In this paper we present a context management infrastructure for mobile environments, aimed at controlling context information life-cycle in this kind of scenarios, with the main goal of enabling application and services to adapt their behaviour to better meet end-user needs. This infrastructure relies on semantic technologies and open standards to improve interoperability, and is based on a central element, the context manager. This element acts as a central context repository and takes most of the computational burden derived from dealing with this kind of information, thus relieving from these tasks to more resource-scarce devices in the system.
