A Second Case of Bilateral Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachments Repaired With Simultaneous Bilateral Pneumatic Retinopexy

Abstract: After a review of the literature, the authors could find only two reported cases of simultaneous bilateral retinal detachments treated successfully with pneumatic retinopexy. This is not only a cost-effective procedure but also allows treatment when there is no immediate operating room availability or a when a quick referral for surgery is not possible.

“…By employing a sequential alternating head position maneuver, the multiple retinal breaks can be individually closed. In the case reported by Rubin et al (7) successful PR surgery was also performed using 0.4 ml of 100% C 3 F 8 gas; however, new retinal breaks appeared two months postoperatively, possibly due to the prolonged presence of C 3 F8 gas bubble that lead to vitreoretinal traction in the eye.…”

“…To date, only two case reports have demonstrated simultaneous PR for bilateral RRD [Kerimoglu et al ( 6 ) and Rubin et al ( 7 )]. In our case report, we deviated from previous approaches.…”

“…S imultaneous or sequential rhegmatogenous retinal detachments repaired with pneumatic retinopexy (PR) have been infrequently reported. [1][2][3] The development of a full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) after PR is also an uncommon complication occurring at 0.3% or less, 4 but has been reported. [5][6][7][8] The following case demonstrates early formation and spontaneous closure of an FTMH in a patient with diabetic macular edema (DME) who recently underwent PR.…”
