A Search for Nontriggered Gamma-Ray Bursts in the BATSE Continuous Records: First Results

Abstract: An off-line scan for nontriggered gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the BATSE daily records at 1024 ms time resolution covering about 7 yr of observations gave 1353 nontriggered and 1581 triggered GRBs. The scan efficiency was measured by adding artificial test bursts to the data. The distribution could be extended log N-log P down to peak fluxes, photons cm Ϫ2 s Ϫ1 . Previous indications of a turnover at small P are not confirmed. P ∼ 0.1 The distribution cannot be fitted with a standard candle model with a nonevolv… Show more

“…The procedure of the scan is described in Stern et al (1999aStern et al ( , 2000b. BrieÑy, it consists of adding test bursts to the data, the triggering, an express analysis, the identiÐca-tion, and the classiÐcation.…”

“…We optimized the value of these parameters by χ 2 minimization over the observed differential number counts in the 50-300 keV band of BATSE (Stern et al 2000). We find that it is always possible to find a good agreement between models and data.…”

“…NOTE ADDED IN MANUSCRIPT.ÈSince this catalog was completed (1999 March) Stern et al (1999Stern et al ( , 2000aStern et al ( , 2000b published results of another search of the archival BATSE data for nontriggered GRBs. Their search uses o †-line trigger criteria that are nearly identical to those discussed in this paper.…”
