During a scan of the archival BATSE daily records covering the entire 9.1 yr (TJD 8369È11690) of the BATSE operation, 3906 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been detected. 2068 of these GRBs are previously known BATSE triggers, while 1838 of them are new nontriggered bursts. It is important that all events were detected in the same type of data and were processed with the same procedure. Therefore these 3906 GRBs constitute a uniform sample. We have created a publicly available electronic data base4 containing this sample. We describe the procedures of the data reduction, the selection of the GRB candidates, and the statistical tests for possible non-GRB contaminations. We also describe a novel test burst method used to measure the scan efficiency and the information obtained using the test bursts. Our scan decreases the BATSE detection threshold to D0.1 photon s~1 cm~2. As a Ðrst result, we show that the di †erential log NÈ log P distribution corrected for the detection efficiency extends to low brightnesses without any indication of a turnover. Any reasonable extrapolation of the new log NÈ log P to lower brightnesses imply a rate of several thousands of GRBs in the universe per year.

The Luminosity Function of Long Gamma-Ray Burst and their rate at z ≥ 6

Abstract.We compute the luminosity function (LF) and the formation rate of long gamma ray bursts (GRBs) in three different scenarios: i) GRBs follow the cosmic star formation and their LF is constant in time; ii) GRBs follow the cosmic star formation but the LF varies with redshift; iii) GRBs form preferentially in low-metallicity environments. We then test model predictions against the Swift 3-year data, showing that scenario i) is robustly ruled out. Moreover, we show that the number of bright GRBs detected by Swift suggests that GRBs should have experienced some sort of luminosity evolution with redshift, being more luminous in the past. Finally we propose to use the observations of the afterglow spectrum of GRBs at z 5.5 to constrain the reionization history, and then applied our method to the case of GRB 050904.

The Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory detects gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with a real-time burst detection (or "" trigger ÏÏ) system running onboard the spacecraft. Under some circumstances, however, a GRB may not activate the on-board burst trigger. For example, the burst may be too faint to exceed the on-board detection threshold, or it may occur while the on-board burst trigger is disabled for technical reasons. This paper describes a catalog of 873 "" nontriggered ÏÏ GRBs that were detected in a search of the archival continuous data from BATSE recorded between 1991 December 9.0 and 1997 December 17.0. For each burst, the catalog gives an estimated source direction, duration, peak Ñux, and Ñuence. Similar data are presented for 50 additional bursts of unknown origin that were detected in the 25È50 keV range ; these events may represent the low-energy "" tail ÏÏ of the GRB spectral distribution. This catalog increases the number of GRBs detected with BATSE by 48% during the time period covered by the search.
