A weakly coupled land surface analysis with SMAP radiance assimilation improves GEOS medium‐range forecasts of near‐surface air temperature and humidity

Abstract: The NASA Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) employs a hybrid four‐dimensional ensemble‐variational (Hybrid‐4DEnVar) atmospheric data assimilation system to provide global, near‐real time weather analysis and forecast products. This study introduces a land analysis into the GEOS Hybrid‐4DEnVar system to additionally assimilate L‐band (1.4 GHz) brightness temperature observations over land from the NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite mission, which are highly sensitive to surface (∼0–5 cm) soil… Show more

“…The assimilation window is six hours long and hourly analysis increments are applied to the model forecasts through a nudged incremental analysis update (IAU) procedure (Takacs et al, 2018). Further details of this system and implementation are available in section 2.1.1 of Reichle et al (2023).The observation error standard deviation was set to 0.68 and 0.72 K for channels 4 and 5 respectively (same as in Akella et al, 2017). The background errors in the skin SST are prescribed using the same procedure as indicated by Derber and Wu (1998), where the skin SST is assumed to be independent of other analysis control variables.…”

“…for formulation andReichle et al (2023) for more recent implementation details. Mathematically, the tendency is defined as (x a -x b )/T_ DA , where x a (x b ) denotes the analysis (background) states and T DA denotes the data assimilation time window.…”
