APENELOPE‐based system for the automated Monte Carlo simulation of clinacs and voxelized geometries—application to far‐from‐axis fields

Abstract: PENEASY and PENEASYLINAC can simulate the considered Varian Clinacs both in an accurate and efficient manner. Fan splitting is crucial to achieve simulation results for the off-axis field in an affordable amount of CPU time. Work to include Elekta linacs and to develop a graphical interface that will facilitate user input is underway.

“…To simulate multiprojection scans, we began by generating scatter-free images using a voxelized version of the PENELOPE photon-electron transport code called penEasy. 35,36 We used the penEasy package (v. 2010-09-02) in ray-tracing mode and ran simulations in parallel on a 190-node cluster of AMD Opteron and Intel Xeon servers in order to generate large image sets quickly. In penEasy ray tracing, a noise-free mean image is generated by casting a small number of deterministic rays from the focal spot to different positions inside each pixel to estimate the probability of x rays arriving at the pixel without interacting along the track.…”

“…To perform the simulations, we have chosen Penelope2008 (Sempau et al 2011, Salvat et al 2008), a MC code whose reliability and performance have been widely tested (Ye et al 2004). Penelope2008 cross section data are those of the EPDL97 (Cullen et al 1997) and EEDL (Cullen et al 2001).…”

“…The algorithm for mixed transport of charged particles implemented by PENELOPE algorithm led to its use in radiotherapy, simulating several irradiations and geometry of clinical situations in radiotherapy, which have shown a good concordance with experimental measurements using different irradiation techniques [17][18][19][20]. This chapter will approach two dosimetry tools: the MAGIC-f gel dosimeter and the PENELOPE-Monte code.…”
