A scoping review protocol to map the research foci trends in tobacco control over the last decade

Abstract: IntroductionTobacco dependence and smoke exposure have been global epidemics with health consequences recognised by the US Surgeon General since the 1960s and 1970s, respectively. During this period, a vast body of research evidence has emerged including many reviews of primary research studies targeting various tobacco control strategies. Published review studies synthesise primary evidence, providing a rich source for mapping the broad range of topics and research foci along with revealing areas of evidence … Show more

“…Scoping reviews are suitable for studying broad topics, are used to comprehensively and systematically map the relevant literature, and to identify key concepts and gaps in research. [23,24] The current scoping review was conducted using the methodological framework of Arksey and O'Malley. [23] This framework identifies five stages in conducting a scoping study; the methods used in the current review will be described according to these stages.…”

“…The final inclusion criteria were: (a) the study had to present information relevant to conversations between people who are communication vulnerable and health-care professionals, (b) the study had to present a direct association between the physical environment and conversations with professionals. The inclusion of information was not limited by the methodological quality of the research [23][24][25]. Each article was discussed by the two researchers to decide upon inclusion or exclusion.…”

“…For example, primary prevention within tobacco control focuses on preventing behavior and risk of exposure to tobacco smoke, whereas within mental health promotion is often about building resilience, thus, slightly different points on the prevention continuum. Specific protocol details can be accessed in our published SRR protocols for tobacco control 12 and physical activity, 11 and the published SRR findings for mental health promotion. 13 Working through various design challenges benefited from Daudt et al's, 19 along with Levac et al's 16 experiences with scoping review methods.…”

“…As the team deliberated on the volume of primary research, we decided to design scoping review studies of published review literature. At this time, we have produced 2 published protocols papers, 1 published results paper, along with 2 recently completed SRR results manuscripts and another findings manuscript based on a secondary analysis a SRR data set; we have also delivered multiple conference presentations and workshops. Our decision to conduct scoping reviews of published review literature was a novel methodological decision within the fields of scoping reviews and of reviewing published reviews.…”
