A Scoping Review on the Effects of Carotenoids and Flavonoids on Skin Damage Due to Ultraviolet Radiation

Abstract: Skin exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays in the sun causes premature ageing and may predispose to skin cancers. UV radiation generates excessive free radical species, resulting in oxidative stress, which is responsible for cellular and DNA damage. There is growing evidence that phytonutrients such as flavonoids and carotenoids may impede oxidative stress and prevent photodamage. We conducted a systematic review of the literature to explore the effects of certain phytonutrients in preventing skin photodamage. We … Show more

“…As shown in Table 6 , the highest SPF values were calculated for kumquat extracts, ranging from 6.41 ± 0.77 to 7.48 ± 0.40 for pulp and peel extracts, respectively, at the highest tested concentration (5%, v/v ). F. margarita peel and pulp extracts might be considered effective photoprotective cosmetic ingredients due to the presence of phytocompounds with known photoprotective activity—carotenoids and flavonoids [ 80 ].…”

“…Certainly, ongoing research is dedicated to identifying compounds capable of mitigating skin photoaging, particularly emphasizing natural substances and their derivatives renowned for their antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory attributes. These include resveratrol‐enriched rice, 7 probiotics, 56 flavonoids, carotenoids, 57 ginsenoside, 58 glycyrrhizic acid, 59 and trigonalline, 60 among others.…”

“…The design of MTDLs in this study includes the indanone moiety from the well‐known AD drug, donepezil, [20] and phenolic groups. The latter were selected as many phenolics have been reported to enhance neurite outgrowth [21–23] . Moreover, extracellular Aβ aggregation is closely connected with declines in cell adhesion and neurite outgrowth [24] .…”
