A school-based physical activity program to improve health and fitness in children aged 6–13 years ("Kinder-Sportstudie KISS"): study design of a randomized controlled trial [ISRCTN15360785]

Abstract: Background: Childhood obesity is the result of a long lasting imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. A major contributing factor is physical inactivity which is closely linked to bone health, cardiovascular disease risk, fitness and psychological factors. The school seems to provide an excellent setting to enhance levels of physical activity (PA). However, there is insufficient data from previous school-based intervention trials on how to enhance overall PA. It is also unknown whether an inter… Show more

“…Measurements Standing height, body weight, blood pressure, waist circumference and skinfold thicknesses at four sites were measured as previously described [22]. BMI, skinfold thickness (sum of the four skinfold thicknesses), and waist circumference were used as measures of obesity.…”

“…The aim, design and assessment of the predictor and outcome variables have been previously described in detail [22]. Briefly, 15 schools with a total of 28 classes were randomly selected from two provinces in Switzerland after stratification by the type of neighbourhood environment (urban vs rural), grade (first and fifth grade) and ethnicity to be representative of Swiss children with respect to sociodemographic status and BMI (Table 1).…”

“…The study design of KISS (ISRCTN15360785) was reported in detail elsewhere (Zahner et al, 2006). The KISS children were randomly selected and stratified by class, geographic area and ethnicity to be representative of Swiss children with respect to gender, sociodemographic status and body mass index (BMI).…”

“…The Kinder-Sportstudie (KISS) is a randomized controlled trial aimed to test whether an extended physical activity program improves physical activity, physical fitness, body composition and quality of life in a representative sample of Swiss children aged 6-13 years (Zahner et al, 2006). The KISS study offered us the unique opportunity to cross-calibrate 4-BIA and 8-BIA against DXA in a representative sample of the general pediatric population.…”
