The scholarship of teaching and learning has become an increasingly popular theme for discussion, research and practice in higher education over the last three decades. In essence, this idea recognizes the importance of taking a critical and research-based approach to teaching and learning, and, in doing so, attempts to elevate the status of the teaching role in comparison to research. This article explores the derivation and development of the scholarship of teaching and learning, and considers its application and critique, through a systematic review of the academic literature. It concludes that, while the scholarship of teaching and learning has been influential in terms of thinking, practice and policy-particularly at the level of the individual, course or department-it has not led to the development of new or innovative lines of research. While it might be argued that this was not its intention, it has limited its impact.

Background. Policy has direct bearing on occupational therapy practice and is a key dimension of the environment. To date, there has not been a synthesis of how policy is addressed in the occupational therapy literature. Purpose. The purpose of this review is to identify and analyze the ways that policy is addressed in the occupational therapy literature. Method. We conducted a scoping review of literature on policy and occupational therapy. Articles were analyzed deductively using a policy framework and inductively to identify overarching themes. Findings. Sixty-four papers were included for analysis. We present the descriptive information of the included articles according to policy type, sphere of action, stage of policy development, level, and actors. The qualitative analysis uncovered two broad concepts: “awareness” about the relationship between policy and practice and messages pertaining to “action.” Implications. There are numerous areas for further research into the policy–occupational therapy nexus, as policy has numerous pathways to shape practice. Practitioners will benefit from better understanding these pathways and actively engaging to align policy with the values of the profession.

Advancement of occupational therapy educators is a significant achievement and important contribution to the American Occupational Therapy Association's Vision 2025 and Centennial Vision. Successful promotion demands excellence and active engagement in faculty skill development, both of which are essential to student learning. The academic promotion and tenure process presents a new and unfamiliar expectation for entry-level and tenure-track occupational therapy educators. A multitude of institutional policies and procedures, formal and informal recommendations from administrators and colleagues, and lack of mentorship can make planning for academic promotion and tenure confusing and difficult. The purpose of this article is to provide guidelines and practical examples based on evidence from higher education and the occupational therapy profession that can assist in the preparation and composition of a portfolio for academic promotion and tenure. Through appraisal and application, a portfolio can successfully present a record of quality teaching, advising, scholarship, professional development, and service while highlighting the distinct value of occupational therapy practice.
