A scalable SNMP-based distributed monitoring system for heterogeneous network computing

Abstract: Traditional centralized monitoring systems do not scale to present-day large, complex, networkcomputing systems. Based o n r ecent SNMP standards for distributed management, this paper addresses the scalability problem through distribution of monitoring tasks, applicable for tools such as SI-MONE (SNMP-based monitoring prototype implemented by the authors).Distribution is achieved b y i n t r oducing one or more levels of a dual entity called the Intermediate Level Manager (ILM) between a manager and the agent… Show more

“…Most of the reviewed papers use a combination of measurements and quantitative analysis (see Table 2). We also found articles dealing with SNMP modeling using some well-known modeling tools such as Petri Nets, UML diagrams [37] and queueing theory [44], or even an SDL specifi cation [38] of the SNMP protocol. We have also found a Tcl/Tk-based multi-platform SNMP agent simulator [39].…”

“…From their testing, the authors concluded that object-level gateways are more interesting than SNMP when the amount of retrieved objects is high. The hierarchical SNMP distribution model was analysed in Subramanyan et al [14], where the performance of a centralized and distributed SNMP are compared in terms of delays involved in performing a designated monitoring task. The results show that the SNMP distributed model performs better than the centralized model.…”

“…In [7], the authors use some queueing modeling features to simulate the behaviour of an SNMPv1 agent. The thesis of Subramanyan [8] contains a model of the behaviour of a hierarchical SNMP based management platform using queueing networks. In [9], authors provide some formulas to assess the performance of different management approaches (centralized, distributed and mobile agents).…”

“…To check a target machine configuration, this system introduces a troubleshooter client/server interface as in Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) [13]. Although SNMP is mainly used to check system and network traffic, this troubleshooter client/server interface is used to execute specific commands [11] to check the configuration of a target machine.…”
