A scalable IoT-fog framework for urban sound sensing

Abstract: Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated devices that can be used to allow large-scale collection and analysis of data. However, as it grew, IoT networks were not capable of managing the data from these services. As a result, cloud computing was introduced to address the need for datacentres for IoT networks. As the technology evolved, the demand for a proper means of supporting and managing crowdsensing and real-time data increased, and cloud servers could no longer keep up with the large volumes … Show more

“…In iIFCs, cloud computing offers scalable and on-demand computing and data storage infrastructures for smart city applications. Furthermore, fog computing enables the establishment of large-scale and scalable IoT networks to support these applications [68,[135][136][137]. A single-level (linear) or multi-level (hierarchical) fog architecture can be employed to provide scalable support for smart city applications.…”

“…The Internet of Things is an integration of various information and communication technologies [1,2,[16][17][18][19][20][21]. Among its major features, ubiquitous sensing is the mechanism that the "things" or devices in IoT perceive the surrounding physical environment, detect and record the changes in the environment, and respond to the changes [22,23]. Ubiquitous sensing is enabled by wireless sensor network (WSN) technologies [1,17,18,24].…”

“…Among them, mobile crowdsensing is getting a foothold, due to the spreading of smartphones; this, although it fosters community engagement, entails the need to solve problems as to the reduction of errors due to non-expert users, high consumption of end devices and difficult data management [18]. Acoustic pollution is also being investigated [19,20]. With reference to computing, cloud-based solutions share the scene with different configurations, based on edge-and fog-computing [16], yet the preferability of a segment in respect to others has not emerged yet.…”
