A Ruthenium–Iron Bimetallic Supramolecular Cage with D4 Symmetry from a Tetrapyridyl Iron(I) Metalloligand

Abstract: The novel iron(I) sandwich compound [Cp*Fe(η 4 -C 4 Py 4 )] (1) was prepared and characterized by various methods, including X-ray crystallography. Coordination-driven self-assembly of a diruthenium acceptor with the tetrapyridyl metalloligand [Cp*Fe(I)(η 4 -C 4 Py 4 )] led to a D 4 -symmetric three-dimensional M 4 L 2 tetragonal supramolecular cage. This cage was characterized by IR and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Its solid-state structure was confirmed by X-ray crystallography,… Show more

“…( Figure 1) was previously isolated by Lee and co-workers via a different route. [7] A second, quasi-reversible oxidation step is observed at more positive anodic peak potentials of 0.13 V vs. Fc/Fc + for 2, and 0.22 V vs. Fc/Fc + for 3. We presume that this second process may correspond to the oxidation of the neutral species to unstable 6e cations [Cp*FeC 4 (3-py) 4 ] + and [Cp*FeC 4 (4-py) 4 ] + .…”

“…[4][5][6] More recently, Lee et al used the coordination of the 4-pyridyl-substituted complex C to a diruthenium acceptor to construct a Ru 4 L 2 tetragonal-prismatic cage. [7] This compound was also crystallographically characterized.…”
