A Rough Road Map to Reflexivity in Qualitative Research into Emotions

Abstract: In qualitative research into emotions, researchers and participants share emotion-laden interactions. Few demonstrate how the analytic value of emotions may be harnessed. In this article we provide an account of our emotional experiences conducting research with two groups: adults living with cystic fibrosis and spouse caregivers of cancer patients. We describe our emotion work during research interviews, and discuss its methodological and theoretical implications. Reflections depict competing emotion norms in… Show more

“…The journal provided me with important supplementary data in terms of insights into my own processes which may have been lost without a written record. The journal informed and promoted the reflexivity which is acknowledged to be an important component of responsible qualitative research [35, 36]. In the 6 week observation period, I also reviewed my clinical notes on previous patients that I had consulted in the labour ward.…”

“…After all, it was Riley, and not I, who was in the field, conducting interviews with the family members of "Alexander," a man diagnosed with dementia. The emotional labors of the fieldwork, as discussed by Ezzy (2010) and Fitzpatrick and Olson (2015), fell entirely to her. But even working at arm's length, reading the literature, as well as participating in data analysis and writing, left me miserable.…”

“…The candor with which the nurses in our sample spoke is, of course, a product of many facets of the research design and execution, including the researchers' efforts to gain rapport and trust from the nursing leadership at the targeted hospitals. Additionally, though, we believe that the audio diary as a method also led to increased candor; substituting a faceless, nonjudgmental recorder for an interviewer forced us to give up a degree of control over the type of data collected as well as the insights that an interview experience might provide (Fitzpatrick and Olson, 2015;Hubbard et al, 2001). Indeed, some recordings in the sample were quite short and/or vague and the research design did not allow us to probe at the time of recording for clarification, elaboration, or examples as any thorough qualitative interviewer would do (Lofland et al, 2005;Miller and Crabtree, 2004).…”
