A Role of Gallic Acid in Oxidative Damage Diseases: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract: Gallic acid is a trihydroxybenzoic acid of plant metabolites widely spread throughout the plant kingdom. It has characteristics of the strong antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities, and can protect biological cells, tissues, and organs from damages caused by oxidative stress. This review aims to summarize the protective roles of gallic acid and the underlying pharmacological mechanisms in the pathophysiological process of the oxidative damage diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular, degenerative, … Show more

“…In addition, as reported for many other kinds of tumors [98], these findings confirmed that, also on NB cells, GA exerts a ROS-mediated cytotoxic anticancer activity at high doses, while it loses its pro-oxidant properties at low doses [97].…”

“…Although the concentrations of GA active on NB cells, including resistant ones, appear very high, they are in accordance or lower than those reported for GA effectiveness on other tumors [98]. In addition, phenolic compounds are established to be safe and not toxic even at higher doses [99].…”

“…In addition, phenyllactic acid has antifungal activity, which can inhibit the growth of pathogens [7,9]. Gallic acid is well known for its antioxidant activity as a protective antioxidant [10,11]. A recent study found that gallic acid could help to improve the preservation of protein and antioxidant capacity during the ensiling of Moringa oleifera leave that has high protein composition [12].…”

“…The imbalance between the production and elimination of (ROS) and (RNS), leading to an increase in steady-state or transient ROS concentration, with consequences of cellular physiology, has been defined as oxidative stress [22]. Among the main ROS, hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) has revealed DNA oxidative injury in cells and lipid peroxidation [23].…”
