A Role for Otoacoustic Emissions in Screening for Hearing Impairement and Middle Ear Disorders in School-Age Children

Abstract: There were some screening criteria based on TEOAE measurement that produced good sensitivity and specificity. A TEOAE screening for hearing impairment and middle ear disease performed as well as or better than the ASHA-recommended protocol, which requires a minimum of two different tests, even when the ASHA protocol was modified to optimize performance. The results suggest that the TEOAE test has the potential to be incorporated successfully into hearing screening programs for school-age children and may have … Show more

“…Rates of tympanometry failure were very low in both stages (1.9% and 1.3%, respectively), in keeping with the trend for Chinese children to be less affected by middle ear infection than their Western counterparts (Rushton, Tong, Yue, Wormald, & van Hasselt, 1997;Wan & Wong, 2002). Likewise, pure tone audiometry failure rates could be considered as very low in both stages (2.6% and 2.8%, respectively), if compared with standard Western reports [e.g., Nozza, Sabo, and Mandel (1997) cite a failure rate of 13.2% for 5-10 yr old children]. In contrast, however, otoscopy failure rates in the current study were twice as high as described in the previous stage (7.8% vs. 3.5%, respectively).…”

“…OAE'lar, işitme kaybı açısından risk taşıyan gruplarda ilk basamak tarama metodu olarak kullanılabilir 13,14 . Yenidoğan işitme taramalarında sık kullanılmakla beraber bazı ototoksik ilaçların kullanımı sırasında oluşabilecek toksisitenin takibinde de kullanılmaktadır 15,16 .…”

Orta kulak patolojilerinden en sık görülen efüzyonlu otitis medianın tanısında, tedaviye alınan cevabın takibinde, otoskopik muayene ve timpanometri ile birlikte kullanıldığında OAE'ların yeri giderek artmaktadır 13,19 .…”
