A role for data richness mapping in exploration decision making

Abstract: Exploration programs involve long, multi-branched decision pathways with many potential outcomes from a single starting point. Critical decisions along this pathway include the choice of the area(s) in which to explore, and the choice to acquire new data sets to assist in exploration. Included in this is a factoring of risks, including the technical risks associated with imperfect data and the value relative to cost of collecting more data. In our experience it is not common practice to explicitly assess and q… Show more

“…As a human-led process which relies on interpreter skill, the background, knowledge and biases of the investigator can have substantial impacts on results [Wilson et al, 2019]. Although clearly not without uncertainty, multi-data analyses provide the potential to manage subjectivity in interpretation and support the ability to make sound judgements [Aitken et al, 2018].…”

“…All three target modelling engines incorporate some concepts of time, such as stratigraphy-fault age relationships, and LoopStructural can handle superimposed fold and fault interference geometries if sufficient data are available (Grose et al, 2021). Finally, the choice of which data to put into the 3D model is by definition outside of the "knowledge" of map2loop, as it can only process datasets it has been made aware of; however, a broader data discovery algorithm that searches for all available data and then decides on the basis of, for example, data density, relevance to the question or volume of interest (Aitken et al, 2018) could be a way to avoid this currently biased process.…”
