A Rock Record of Complex Aeolian Bedforms in a Hesperian Desert Landscape: The Stimson Formation as Exposed in the Murray Buttes, Gale Crater, Mars

Abstract: Lithified aeolian strata encode information about ancient planetary surface processes and the climate during deposition. Decoding these strata provides insight regarding past sediment transport processes, bedform kinematics, depositional landscape, and the prevailing climate. Deciphering these signatures requires a detailed analysis of sedimentary architecture to reconstruct dune morphology, motion, and the conditions that enabled their formation. Here, we show that a distinct sandstone unit exposed in the foo… Show more

“…Banham et al. ( 2018 , 2021a , 2021b ) interpret the Stimson fm to have been deposited by migrating aeolian dunes in an arid environment sometime after the sediments of the Mount Sharp group were buried, lithified, and exposed by erosion. They also find that the paleoclimate resulted in winds that transported sand to the northeast, in the opposite direction and with larger particle sizes than what is observed in the currently active Bagnold dune field (Sect.…”

“…Water released at 500 • C from SAM EGA of Stimson materials could be associated with hydroxylated amorphous Al/Si phases or water trapped within amorphous phases, and not attributed to phyllosilicates [80] (Figure 11). The sample "Edinburgh" (EB) was drilled in the Greenheugh pediment capping unit, which is considered an up-slope extension of the Stimson formation and part of the Siccar Point group [53,[130][131][132]. The CheMin XRD pattern of EB shows an (021) peak at~4.5 Å and an especially weak, broad peak at 10 Å, consistent with a poorly crystalline collapsed smectite (Figure 20).…”

“…The data used during this study are publicly available on the NASA Planetary Data System, via the MSL Analyst's Handbook, or the PDS image Atlas (https://pds.nasa.gov/datasearch/data-search/). Image products data generated by this study are provided as an additional resource via the Zenodo open access repository - Banham, Gupta, Rubin et al (2020). This includes: a slide pack containing figures, data sources, and additional maps, provided as a teaching resource; a GIS data set for the Murray buttes area showing the location of buttes, field-of-view for the mosaics used, and the transport directions.…”

“…Stimson formation strata exposed at the Murray buttes preserve the thickest, most laterally exposed, three-dimensional (3D) outcrops of aeolian strata encountered by the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) as of the time of writing (cf. Banham et al, 2018;Banham et al, 2020aBanham et al, , 2002bBanham, Gupta, Rubin, et al, 2020). The lateral and vertical continuity of this outcrop, combined with the high-spatial resolution images collected by the rover, Curiosity, have allowed for architectural reconstruction of the bedforms in similar detail as attained by studies of aeolian strata on Earth.…”
