A Robust Torque and Drag Analysis Approach for Well Planning and Drillstring Design

Abstract: This paper presents a novel torque and drag analysis approach and demonstrates its robustness when used with a versatile computer program. Torque and Drag analysis remains an important evaluation process for assessing drilling feasibility of directional wells, minimizing the occurrence of catastrophic drill string failures and avoiding premature termination of the drilling operation before reaching planned target depth. From a draft well plan, the drilling engineering analysis is initiated wi… Show more

“…Drag and torque problems are connected with directional wells (directional and horizontal wells) [11]. Torque and Drag analysis remains an important evaluation process for assessing drilling feasibility of directional wells, because it helps in: â—‹ 1 minimizing the occurrence of tragic drill string failures and â—‹ 2 avoiding the early ending of the drilling operation before reaching target [2]. The high demands of oil dedicate to drill deep and more complex well also to drill extended reach wells.…”

“…Since its introduction more than ten years ago, torque and drag predictive software has gained wide acceptance for routine well trajectory design and post-event analysis [1,2]. There are a variety of sources of excessive drag and torque [3]:…”

“…There are six calculation methods which have been widely used in directional drilling application; tangential, Mercury, average angle, balance tangential, minimum curvature and radius curvature method. Minimum curvature method is often use in order to maximize survey calculation accurately [11].…”
