A robust method for the synthesis of colloidal PbS nanosheets

Abstract: In the synthesis of colloidal PbS nanosheets, acetic acid – either injected externally or produced during the reaction – has a significant effect on the growth of the nanosheets. When the acetic acid to lead molar ratio is above 1:8, no nanosheets are observed in the product. By replacing lead acetate with lead oxide to prepare the lead precursor for the reaction, the effect of acetic acid is avoided, resulting in a robust synthesis with nearly 100% success rate. In the new synthesis, the purity of trioctylpho… Show more

“…To achieve absorption in the SWIR, narrow band gap materials 7,8 have to be used. PbS nanosheets 9,10 have been synthetized 11,12 and show tunable absorption 13 almost up to the bulk band gap value. 14 They also present a large lateral extension [15][16][17] (up to several µm) which is of great interest for the design of single-particle devices such as field effect transistors 18,19 (FETs) and photodetectors.…”

“…18,19 The confinement within the thickness of the NPLs or nanosheets enables tuning of the effective band gap from 0.41 eV up to 1 eV, while maintaining a high charge carrier mobility in the plane direction. 12,13,19,20 There are a few methods of the colloidal synthesis of anisotropic PbS nanomaterials mainly describing the fabrication of PbS nanosheets based on the oriented attachment of small PbS NCs 6,12,15,[21][22][23][24] or nanowires 25 into lateral expanded structures and single crystal honeycomb structures. 26 However, this field is not fully explored yet and there is plenty of potential for electronic and optical investigations arising from the 2D morphology.…”

“…However, in the synthesis of colloidal PbS nanosheets, acetic acid causes aggregation of the nanosheets and ruins the synthesis. 24 A trace amount of acetate in the reaction solution leads to star-shaped nanocrystals during the synthesis of PbSe quantum dots. 25 In the synthesis of PbSe nanorods described by the reaction equation (eq 1), we reduced acetic acid and water from the reaction solution by degassing.…”
