A Robust Method for Rotation Estimation Using Spherical Harmonics Representation

Abstract: This paper presents a robust method for 3D object rotation estimation using spherical harmonics representation and the unit quaternion vector. The proposed method provides a closed-form solution for rotation estimation without recurrence relations or searching for point correspondences between two objects. The rotation estimation problem is casted as a minimization problem, which finds the optimum rotation angles between two objects of interest in the frequency domain. The optimum rotation angles are obtained … Show more

“…If |F 1 (u) | and |F 2 (u)| are transformed into polar coordinates, the rotation over the angle θ is reduced to a (circular) shift over θ. It can compute the Fourier transform of the spectra |F 1 (u)| and |F 2 (u)|, and compute θ as the phase shift between the two [19,20].…”

“…That is, the input samples are defined on the R 3 grid, also called the volume data, used widely in medical imaging. Most angle estimation algorithms with the spherical harmonics work on the surface input data [1,6,7], where the data is parametrized in terms of the polar angle θ and the azimuthal angle ϕ. The surface information describes the general outline of the object in 2D but the full energy distribution of the object in 3D is not included.…”
