A robotic assistant for trans-oral surgery: the robotic endo-laryngeal flexible (Robo-ELF) scope

Abstract: This paper describes the continued development of the Robotic EndoLaryngeal (Robo-ELF) Scope System, a simple clinically usable robot for manipulating flexible endoscopes, particularly in laryngeal surgery. The system includes a robot with three active and two passive degrees of freedom, a five degree of freedom passive positioning arm, a malleable scope shaft support, and a custom joystick controller. The Robo-ELF Scope allows a surgeon to control a flexible endoscope with only one hand and also to release th… Show more

“…In the past, the team around Olds et al developed a flexible endoscope that can be controlled via a joystick with only one hand 134 . This Robo-ELF system was specifically developed for laryngeal surgery and allows surgeons to use an additional instrument with the other hand 133 . Robo-ELF was tested in cadaver experiments, currently no information about the further development is available.…”

“…The main challenge for microsurgery is being able to perform tasks beyond the level of human perception and dexterity [1]. The poor sensory feedback to human operators brings challenges to microscale manoeuvres in a confined environment [2]. Other difficulties include sophisticated teleoperation mapping [3], the small field of view provided by the microscope [4], occlusions, instrument collision and a lack of tactile and haptic feedback.…”

“…However, the proposed systems were developed to motorize a flexible endoscope that is used in investigation of the colon [5]- [8] or throat [9]- [10]. The structures and steering methods between flexible endoscopes used in rhinoscopy and in gastroscopy are different.…”
