A Risk-Based Approach for Managing Aquaculture Used Oxytetracycline-Induced TetR in Surface Water Across Taiwan Regions

Abstract: Oxytetracycline (OTC), one of the most important antibiotics in aquaculture industry, has been linked to emergence of antibiotic resistant genes in the aquatic environment. Given rapid growth of the aquaculture industry and unregulated use of antibiotics, it is necessary to implement measures to mitigate the impact of antibiotic resistance risk on environmental and human health. However, there is a lack of quantitative models to properly assess risk of antibiotic resistance associated with environmentally rele… Show more

“…Oxytetracycline (OTC) is an antibiotic applied for the treatment of bacterial infections in humans and animals (Ma et al 2016). Curative and preventive treatments of bacterial infections improve the production of farm animals; this is the reasons why OTC is widely used in animal husbandry such as aquaculture and livestock (Lu et al 2021;Qin et al 2022). The use of OTC in dairy cows is beneficial to farmers, which has improved production performance.…”

“…Additionally, antibiotics are commonly administered through baths, in-feed, gavage, and injection [ 21 ]. OTC baths have been reported to be effective and are extensively used in bacterial infections such as aeromonosis, pseudomonosis, and vibriosis in fish [ 9 , 29 , 30 ]. Therefore, the use of tetracyclines in ornamental fish shops has become a standard practice to prevent infections.…”

“…Commercial aquaculture practices commonly used to prevent or heal damage in fish intended for human consumption, can represent a good starting point to reduce losses The aquaculture industry still represent a major area of antibiotic misuse [17] and so far, oxytetracycline hydrochloride and kanamycin have positively resolved a wide spectrum of fish bacterial diseases, including furunculosis, aeromonosis, pseudomonosis, lactococcosis, and vibriosis, being administered via feed, bath treatment or injection [18]. Excessive and unregulated use of antibiotics in aquaculture, as well as in the ornamental fish industry, has led to the development of gut antibiotic-resistant bacteria [19] and antimicrobial-resistant pathogens [20], subsequently affecting the immune system of fish.…”
