A Ring-Shaped Photodiode Designed for Use in a Reflectance Pulse Oximetry Sensor in Wireless Health Monitoring Applications

Abstract: We report a photodiode for use in a reflectance pulse oximeter for use in autonomous and low-power homecare applications. The novelty of the reflectance pulse oximeter is a large ring shaped backside silicon pn photodiode. The ring-shaped photodiode gives optimal gathering of light and thereby enable very low light-emitting diode (LED) driving currents for the pulse oximeter. The photodiode also have a two layer SiO 2 SiN interference filter yielding 98% transmission at the measuring wavelengths, 660 nm and 94… Show more

“…The MMA7361L output signal noise is reduced by the low pass filter capacitor. [20][21] on the wrist sensor node is used to collect the pulse information which reflects the human physiological state. The pulse modulation circuit, the low pass filter circuit and the suffix amplifying circuit are provided to remove such as dc interference and improve the circuit gain [13] which is shown in figure 4.…”

“…An optical fiber SPR system can detect reactions of living cells attached to the fiber tip in a real-time manner, and human blood-group detections have been carried out by SPR with high accuracy [27,28]. Other biomedical devices like ring-shaped photodiode fabricated and mounted on a printed circuit board for pulse oximetry measurements and optical sensors used miniature LEDs for cerebral blood volume measurement are both novel and useful [29,30].…”

“…Continuous health monitoring for patients with chronic diseases or people working in high-risk environments has been an interesting topic of research in recent years [1]. In modern medical practice, the blood oxygen level has been considered as one of the important signs of the body functionality along with the traditional ones, such as heart rate, glucose level, blood pressure, breathing rate and body temperature.…”
