A rice jacalin‐related mannose‐binding lectin gene, OsJRL, enhances Escherichia coli viability under high salinity stress and improves salinity tolerance of rice

Abstract: Salinity, which is one of the most common abiotic stresses, may severely affect plant productivity and quality. Although plant lectins are thought to play important roles in plant defense signaling during pathogen attack, little is known about the contribution of plant lectins to stress resistance. We cloned and functionally characterized a rice jacalin-related mannose-binding lectin gene, OsJRL, from rice 'Nipponbare'. We analyzed the expression patterns of OsJRL under various stress conditions in rice. Furth… Show more

“…Recently, this gene was identified in Saltol-1, a major quantitative trait loci related to salt stress [139]. Overexpression of Orysata , also known as SALT, in rice plants improves salinity tolerance [140] and enhances resistance to Magnaporthe grisea infection [141]. The Arabidopsis-related JAX1 was shown to confer broad but specific resistance to potex viruses [142].…”

“…The coding region of OsWRKY97 was amplified and cloned into the pAcGFP1-N1 vector to generate the OsWRKY97-GFP (green fluorescent protein) fusion construct, which was inserted into the pCAMBIA1300 vector, and the constructed vector was transferred into Agrobacterium. After sequencing confirmation, the fusion structure and the control (empty body) vector were cotransfected with another NLS-RFP vector respectively into tobacco cells by Agrobacterium mediated transient expression method, and the fluorescence signal was observed by confocal laser scanning microscope [58].…”

“…Involvement of lectin protein has been reported in regulating heat stress in Dolichos biflorus (Spadoro-Tank and Etzler, 1988). Recently, emerging evidences have highlighted their regulatory role in abiotic stress responses including drought and salinity tolerance (Hirano et al, 2000; Jiang et al, 2012a; He et al, 2016). In plants, 12 lectin protein families have been reported, out of which most of the members are expressed constitutively and show a positive regulatory role against pathogen attack (Jiang et al, 2010).…”
