A Rice Glutamyl-tRNA Synthetase Modulates Early Anther Cell Division and Patterning

Abstract: Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) have housekeeping roles in protein synthesis, but little is known about how these aaRSs are involved in organ development. Here, we report that a rice (Oryza sativa) glutamyl-tRNA synthetase (OsERS1) maintains proper somatic cell organization and limits the overproliferation of male germ cells during early anther development. The expression of OsERS1 is specifically detectable in meristematic layer 2-derived cells of the early anther, and osers1 anthers exhibit overproliferat… Show more

“…In rice, ROS level is extremely low during anther cell specification stages, which is less than 200 pmol mg − 1 , and the ROS level increases twice at stage 4 to stage 5 (Yang et al, 2018). 3,3′-diaminobenzidine (DAB) staining indicates the accumulation of H 2 O 2 in middle layer and endothecium from stage 5 to stage 9 and decrease of ROS at stage 10 and stage 11 (Fig.…”

“…Treatment of wheat with mycotoxin deoxynivalenol activates the expression of wheat methionyl‐tRNA synthetase which participates in plant defense and detoxification conferring resistance to mycotoxins and mycotoxin‐producing fungal pathogens . Rice glutamyl‐tRNA synthetase (GluRS) modulates male organ development by affecting metabolic homeostasis and redox status . However, exact molecular mechanisms of noncanonical action of these plant aaRSs are not yet deciphered.…”

“…The expression of methionyl-tRNA synthetase (MetRS) gene of wheat was upregulated by a mycotoxin deoxynivalenol treatment and conferred resistance to this mycotoxin [ 11 ]. A number of characterized aaRS mutants impair particular developmental processes, but do not impair global protein synthesis, which is generally lethal [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ]. These observations suggest that aaRSs in plants may have specific functions other than tRNA aminoacylation.…”
