A revision of the tribe Planitorini van Achterberg (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Euphorinae), with description of a new genus from Australia

Abstract: The tribe Planitorini van Achterberg (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Euphorinae) is revised. One new genus Paramannokeraia gen. n. (type species: P. gibsoni sp. n.) and five new species from Australia are described and illustrated: Mannokeraia albipalpis van Achterberg, sp. n., M. nigrita van Achterberg, sp. n., M. punctata van Achterberg, sp. n., Paramannokeraia gibsoni van Achterberg & Quicke, sp. n. and P. juliae van Achterberg, sp. n. The tribe Mannokeraiini van Achterberg, 1995, is synonymized with the tribe Pl… Show more

“…Several E. persicae morphotypes ( E. persicae , E. palaestinensis (= E. persicae , see Gärdenfors (1986)), E. rugosus , E. radiatus , E. transversus ) and E. longistigmus (member of lacertosus species group) were later reclassified to this genus, based on the same morphological character (Chen and Shi 2001). Van Achterberg (1997), synonymised Fovephedrus as a synonym of Ephedrus , but stated that it could be considered as a valid subgenus. The presence of mesoscutellar fovea is characteristic of several Ephedrus species.…”

“…Currently, genus Ephedrus comprises three subgenera: Lysephedrus ( E. validus ), Breviephedrus ( E. brevis ) and Ephedrus (all other species), and the third is divided into three species groups ( plagiator , lacertosus , persicae ) (Gärdenfors 1986). Based on the presence of fovea on mesoscutum, Chen (1986) described the genus Fovephedrus Chen, which was later synonymised with Ephedrus , but proposed as a separate subgenus (van Achterberg 1997). However, position of Fovephedrus within genus Ephedrus was completely unclear.…”

“…The specimens examined in this study were deposited in the collections of the National Institute of Biological Resources (Incheon, Republic of Korea; NIBR) and the Science Museum of Natural Enemies (Geochang, Republic of Korea; SMNE). (Belokobylskij, 2000) (Japan: Ryukyus) (Belokobylskij 2000a;van Achterberg and Quicke 2000). Most of species of this subgenus (five species) were described from the Greater Sunda Islands, and only a single species, C.…”

“…(Eu.) breviceps (Quicke & van Achterberg, 2000), which was described from Malaysia (Sabah) (van Achterberg and Quicke 2000), but differs from the latter species by having the eye in dorsal view ~1.2 times longer than the temple (1.5 times in C. breviceps), temple distinctly convex in dorsal view (weakly convex in C. breviceps), teeth of the scape distinctly protruding dorsally (weakly protruding in C. breviceps), frons with distinct but not high carinae divergent anteriorly (without carinae in C. breviceps), mandible with two apical teeth (only with one tooth in C. breviceps), area below and behind the mandibular base smooth (rugose-striate in C. breviceps), and the second metasomal tergite densely reticulate-areolate (sparsely longitudinally rugose in C. breviceps).…”

“…; van Achterberg et al . ), one genus of Microgastrinae (Fernandez‐Triana & Boudreault ), a few species of the orgiline genus Orgilus Haliday (Taeger ; Shaw & Huddleston ) and females of the aberrant subfamily Masoninae which have conflicting relationships. Of these non‐cyclostomes, very micropterous and completely apterous species are restricted to the Brachistinae (Brachistini) and Euphorinae (Cosmophorini, Meteorini, Planitorini).…”
