A revision of the shore-fly genus Hydrochasma Hendel (Diptera, Ephydridae)

Abstract: A revision of the shore-fly genus Hydrochasma Hendel. The species of the genus Hydrochasma Hendel are revised, including 27 new species (type locality in parenthesis): H. andeum (Ecuador. Guayas: Boliche (02°07.7'S, 79°35.5'W)), H. annae (United States. Utah. Grand: Swasey Beach (15.3 km N Green River; 39°07'N, 110°06.6'W; Green River; 1255 m)), H. capsum (Ecuador. Orellana: RíoTiputini (0°38.2'S, 76°8.9'W)), H. castilloi (Ecuador. Loja: Catamayo (03°59'S, 79°21'W)), H. crenulum (Peru. Cuzco: Paucartambo, Atal… Show more

“…The latter genus, Allotrichoma , is the subject of this revision, and why and how its distributional pattern developed and what the New World species-level diversity is have in part prompted this research. This revision also complements relatively recent and ongoing research on the Old World fauna of Allotrichoma ( Krivosheina and Zatwarnicki 1997 ), since we also sought to know if any species found in the Palearctic Region actually occurs in the Nearctic Region, as has been reported ( Cresson 1942 , Wirth 1965 , Mathis and Zatwarnicki 1995 ). Finally, discovering the phylogenetic relationships of taxa within and related to Allotrichoma , including relationships among taxa above the species level, continues to intrigue us and is also investigated here.…”

“…The genus Rhynchopsilopa Hendel 1913 is one of 11 genera in the tribe Psilopini (subfamily Discomyzinae) and currently includes 20 species (Mathis and Zatwarnicki 1995). The genus is distinctive and is easily recognized by the long, pendant antennae; the short frons; the depressed face with a sharp epistoma; the long proboscis, and the convex thorax and abdomen (Wirth 1968).…”

“…Over twenty years later, Wirth (1968) produced the first catalog of shore flies from the Neotropical Region and listed 30 species in the same four genera. In recent revisions (Mathis and Zatwarnicki 2012, 2013; Mathis et al 2016), herein, and in a forthcoming revision of the Neotropical species of Discocerina (Costa et al in prep), we treat 38 species so far in seven genera from the fauna of Brazil alone. The purpose of this paper is to revise species of the genus Lamproclasiopa , including description of thirteen undescribed species.…”
