A Revision of the Solanum asterophorum Species Group (subg. Leptostemonum)

Abstract: Abstract—The Solanum asterophorum species group includes four species, all endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Species of this group are all prickly shrubs with zig-zag branches, paired leaves, reduced leaf-opposed inflorescences, and partially accrescent fruiting calyces. Two species, S. asterophorum and S. pilluliferum, are relatively widespread, while the other two, S. igniferum and S. sessilantherum, are narrow endemics in southeastern Brazil. We review the morphology, taxonomic history, nomenclatur… Show more

“…Young stem color ranges from completely green or partly to completely deep purple (Fig. 2D, E, 3A–C), as has been found in other Solanum species (e.g., S.asterophorum Mart., Gouvêa and Stehmann in press.). This distinct coloration can be confined to juvenile plants (as in S.asterophorum ) or continue to be present on growing stems of reproductive individuals (as is observed in S.medusae and S.kollastrum Gouvêa & Giacomin, Gouvêa et al 2018).…”

“…1A-F). New and unexpected morphological diversity continues to be discovered as baseline taxonomic work advances in Solanum , with some of recent discoveries including a species with heart-shaped anthers ( S. anomalostemon S.Knapp & M.Nee; Knapp & Nee, 2009), tuber-bearing shrubs (Asterophorum clade; Gouvêa & Stehmann, 2019), species with leaky dioecy and fluid sex expression (Martine & al., 2009; McDonnell & al., 2019) and with resin-glands (Silva Sampaio & al., 2021).…”

“…In Brazil, the Atlantic Forest stands out as a centre of diversity for the genus, with 184 species recorded thus far, of which 98 are endemic (Stehmann et al 2009; Flora do Brasil 2020 under construction 2019). In addition to species level endemism, the Atlantic Forest domain harbours several endemic lineages within Solanum, such as the Asterophorum and Inornatum species groups (Giacomin and Stehmann 2014;Gouvêa and Stehmann 2019). In fact, the domain shows an ascending curve of newly described taxa in the last years, demonstrating the insufficiency of taxonomic knowledge (Linnaean shortfall) (Sobral and Stehmann 2009).…”
