A revision of Poa subsection Aphanelytrum (Poaceae, Pooideae, Poaeae, Poinae); and a new species, Poa auriculata

Abstract: In this study the peculiar Andean grass genus Aphanelytrum, with two species, is reduced to Poa subsect. Aphanelytrum comb. & stat. nov. A third species, Festuca reclinata, is assigned to the subsection, which shows states transitional between a more typical Poa and Aphanelytrum. Poa subgen. Poa supersect. Homalopoa sect. Dioicopoa subsect. Aphanelytrum comb. & stat. nov. is characterized in having stooling perennials with decumbent to spreading culm bases that continuously branch and often root at low to mid-… Show more

“…Fortytwo species of Poa, including two samples of P. jubata and two subspecies of P. trivialis, were chosen to represent all subgenera of Poa (classification following Gillespie et al, 2007;Soreng et al, 2009Soreng et al, , 2010Soreng et al, , 2015aRefulio et al, 2012;Peterson and Soreng, 2016). The Poa species included in our study represent selections from all 10 plastid and 11 nrDNA genotype groups previously identified , including the x-clade .…”

“…These smooth, glabrous, and oblong spikelets are laterally compressed and break up at maturity, disarticulating below each fertile floret. The rachilla is slightly dorsoventrally compressed (Peterson & Soreng, 2016), the rachilla internodes are scaberulous, and the apical sterile florets are rudimentary (Clayton et al., 2012; Vilca, 2018).…”

“…In addition, Aphanelytrum procumbens Hack. is now treated as Poa hitchcockiana Soreng & P.M. Peterson (Peterson and Soreng 2016). This brings the total to 16 known species of Poa in Ecuador including our new one.…”
