A revision of Holm's Early and early Mid Cambrian hyoliths Of Sweden

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Re-examination of type specimens of Early Cambrian and early Mid Cambrian hyoliths from Sweden confirms placement of Hyolithes teretiusculus Linnarsson in Hexitheca Syssoiev, and reassignment to the order Hyolithida rather than Orthothecida. Inclusion of Hyolithes affinis Holm within Decoritheca Syssoiev is re-confirmed, and Hyolithes socialis Linnarsson is now referred to Nevadotheca Malinky and Slapylites Marek. An operculum included under Hyolithes oelandicus Holm is transferred provisionally to M… Show more

“…G) indicates that the profile was not strongly inflated, as in N. whitei . Nevadotheca socialis (Linnarsson, ) and Nevadotheca tenuistriata (Linnarsson, ) from the middle Cambrian of Sweden, as redescribed by Malinky & Berg‐Madsen () and Berg‐Madsen & Malinky (), have much more slender conchs (incremental angle 9° and 13°, respectively) than N. boerglumensis (20–25°). Opercula assigned to N. tenuistriata by Berg‐Madsen & Malinky (, text‐fig.…”

“…There is a superficial resemblance between the spicule rods in L. conicus and the ribs of some early cephalopods and hyoliths (Malinky and Berg‐Madsen 1999), but these have completely mineralized shells. In the Murero Formation, hyolith conchs are either conspicuously three‐dimensional or show cracked walls owing to compaction, a process not present in these sponges.…”
