A Review: Sensitization in stainless steel

Abstract

Stainless steels are widely used all over the world because of their superior properties. SS 304 is the most widely used grade of Stainless Steels. A minimum of 11.5% Cr is needed to have stainless or rust-free properties in SS by forming passive Sensitization is a common issue in the fabrication of stainless steel because it crosses the certain temperature range in process like welding etc. Such issues include sensitization, sigma phase formation, and many other phases precipitation. Sensitization involves precipitation of Cr23C6 carbides. This paper discusses sensitization, its mechanism, carbide precipitation, detection techniques, prevention, and remedies for sensitization in austenitic stainless steel.
