A Review on Zeolites and Their Applications in Dentistry

Abstract: Purpose of Review Zeolite is an aluminosilicate compound having a wide spectrum of applications in medicine and dentistry. Several articles were published combining zeolites with various other elements for different applications in dentistry. This review aims to provide a detailed review on the origin of zeolites, their physical and chemical properties and possible applications as dental materials. Recent Findings Zeolite-based hybrid films can be used for… Show more

“…Zeolites have found medical applications in modern drug delivery systems [ 197 ], wound healing [ 198 ], hemodialysis [ 199 ], and tooth root canal filling [ 200 ]. The adsorption and ion exchange properties of natural clinoptilolite have been exploited in the development of an anti-diarrheal drug [ 201 ] and a gastric acid neutralizer [ 202 ].…”

“…Zeolite is a porous aluminosilicate biomaterial with a similar composition to GIC [ 9 , 14 ]. It has a three-dimensional honeycomb-like structure with anionic pores that allows it to selectively exchange cations with the surrounding environment [ 9 , 15 , 16 ].…”

“…Silver–zeolite-incorporated GIC has a similar biocompatibility to conventional GICs in cell cytotoxicity tests [ 17 ]. In addition, silver–zeolite has been demonstrated to enhance the antimicrobial properties of GIC in previous studies [ 9 , 14 , 17 , 22 ]. However, no studies have investigated the effect of silver–zeolite on silver-reinforced GIC.…”
