A Review on Video-Based Human Activity Recognition

Abstract: This review article surveys extensively the current progresses made toward video-based human activity recognition. Three aspects for human activity recognition are addressed including core technology, human activity recognition systems, and applications from low-level to high-level representation. In the core technology, three critical processing stages are thoroughly discussed mainly: human object segmentation, feature extraction and representation, activity detection and classification algorithms. In the hum… Show more

“…There are many papers that propose various possible features sets and compare their performance in pattern recognition tasks. The state -of -the art discussion on human actions pattern recognition is covered in survey papers for example in [5,36,71] or in our previous papers on human actions recognition [25,26]. In this section we will present overview concerning most popular features sets and pattern recognition algorithms for human motion classification.…”

“…Systems for daily life assistance have been designed for monitoring people with dementia, measuring sleeping-respiration, and tracking medication habits [16]. Vision systems can also feature in infotainment gadgets that have fuelled research interest in their use in healthcare applications [17].…”

“…Activities refer to complex behaviors consisting of a sequence of actions and/or overlapped and interwoven actions that can be performed by a single individual or several individuals interacting with each other [1] [4]. Activity recognition in healthcare systems considered as a way to facilitate the work of healthcare in order to treat and care for patients, reduce the workload of medical staff, decrease hospital stays for patients, reduce costs and improve the quality of life for people who need care [1] [2]. Medical experts believe one of the best ways to identify and explore emerging medical conditions is to monitor changes in daily activities, before these conditions become serious [7].…”
