A Review on Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) Tilt-Rotor and Tilt Wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)

Abstract: The Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with the tilt-rotor mechanism also known as hybrid UAVs have a lot of challenges in designing and controlling concerning their use in harsh weather for surveillance and access to remote areas. This review paper presents a review of the preliminary design of hybrid aircraft and control systems. The tilt-rotor mechanism and tilt wings of a hybrid UAV are analyzed. The paper provides an outline of technical advances in UAVs in hybrid configu… Show more

“…Since m B depends solely on the propulsion and aerodynamics of the X-Vert, each of these must be mathematically manipulated in order to allow for the implementation of (41). Starting with (7) and linearizing it for the operating condition defined by Ω 0 , the moment contribution from the propulsion subsystem becomes…”

“…The reviews in Refs. [5][6][7] provide additional insights into VTOL aircraft. Among the different hybrid and convertible UAVs mentioned in these works, tail-sitters have a simplified mechanical design, generally requiring fewer actuators and moving parts, although at the cost of being susceptible to crosswinds when performing vertical flight, as the wing is perpendicular to the ground, and thus requiring complex transition maneuvers [6].…”

“…The VTOL type UAV is currently one of the most dynamically developing unmanned technologies [ 38 , 39 , 40 ]. The VTOL platform ( Figure 2 ) used at this stage of research was a prototype on a 1:1 scale.…”

“…The tilt-rotor aircraft is similar to a glider but has a rotor on top of its fixed wing [21]. It is a hybrid of a glider and a quadrotor or tri-rotor UAVs [29]. An extra servomotor is used to tilt the rotor-carrying shaft.…”
