A Review on the Pumping Behavior of Modern Concrete

Abstract: Pumping is the most common technique used to transport fresh concrete in construction sites. The large-scale use of concrete all over the world makes the pumping increasingly important. A wide variety of additives and admixtures are incorporated into modern concrete in order for sustainable development. The performance of modern concrete is rather complex and its pumping behavior differs significantly from that of conventional concrete, especially in the fresh stage. This paper presents a comprehensive overvie… Show more

“…This paper presents experimental results concerning the permeability of concrete in which the influence of a new generation of polycarboxylate superplasticizers and a chemically active admixture to increase the compressive strength was also evaluated. Additives and admixtures are nowadays incorporated into modern concrete to improve its construction performance, but they also influence the pumping behavior of such concrete, which differs significantly from that of conventional concrete, especially in the initial stage [ 23 , 24 ]. The final goal of using chemical admixtures is to achieve a more durable concrete with self-healing ability [ 25 , 26 ].…”

“…This paper aims to evaluate concrete with compressive strength of 20-70 MPa. The objectives of the study are (1) to examine the sources of concrete used in the construction to determine the service life of concrete structures; (2) to assess the durability of SCC and C20/25 with respect to their contents; (3) to evaluate plasticizing agents as admixtures for concrete products; (4) to compare the tribological properties of SCC and C20/25 concretes; and (5) to measure the coefficient of friction for concrete samples on steel with the TR210 device. The primary objective is to compare the durability properties of SCC and concrete with equivalent compressive strength.…”

“…Therefore, it is imperative to develop new and improve the existing ways of enhancing concrete properties. Besides the strength of hardened concrete, it is necessary to consider the tribological characteristics of fluid concrete, which directly affect the formwork design [1]. The past decade saw a rise in the popularity of self-compacting concrete (SCC).…”

“…Contradicting requirements of properties always exist in different casting processes. For example, fresh concrete should possess relatively low yield stress, suitable plastic viscosity and excellent stability during pumping process [1][2][3]. After the concrete casting into the formwork, however, a higher yield stress is beneficial to reducing the formwork pressure and speeding up the casting process [4][5][6].…”
