A review on the mechanisms of the effect of silymarin in milk thistle (Silybum marianum) on some laboratory animals

Abstract: One of the most valuable medicinal plants is milk thistle (Silybum marianum) or martighal. An annual or biennial plant of the Asteraceae family and English name Milk thistle, a Matte green colour and prickly plant with a standing stem that can be thick, simple, or slightly branched (ramified). Its seeds contain about 70%-80% of the flavonolignans of silymarin and about 20%-30% of polymeric and oxidized polyphenolic compounds (such as tannins). Traditionally, the plant has been used to increase milk secretion, … Show more

“…Moreover, Silymarin is related to the decrease in liver cholesterol [ 29 ] and this function is mainly due to fat-mediated improved bioavailability and/or by inhibition of resorption of dietary cholesterol. And the birds which were treated with silymarin had reduced concentrations of triglycerides which is in line with Khazaei et al [ 30 ] who observed a similar result in Japanese quail. Recently, consumers are very much concerned about the safety and quality of meat.…”

“…Extracts from fruits of milk thistle are a basic component for many drugs used to treat diseases of the bladder and liver. The experimental studies on laboratory animals revealed that liposomal milk thistlecontaining drugs inhibit the formation of toxic products of peroxidationlipid hydroperoxides, diene conjugates, TBA-active products and recover the reserve of liver lipid-and water-soluble antioxidants (Khazaei et al, 2022).…”

“…However, individual components contained in silymarin may be selectively responsible for various therapeutical bioactivities [ 71 ]. The mechanisms of action of the main bioactive compounds of MT have been discussed by numerous studies, but they are not fully elucidated yet [ 3 , 72 , 73 , 74 ]. The effectiveness of MT fruit has been evaluated particularly to test its hepatoprotective role [ 1 , 2 , 75 , 76 , 77 ].…”
