A review on the design of ternary logic circuits*

Abstract: A multi-valued logic system is a promising alternative to traditional binary logic because it can reduce the complexity, power consumption, and area of circuit implementation. This article briefly summarizes the development of ternary logic and its advantages in digital logic circuits. The schemes, characteristics, and application of ternary logic circuits based on CMOS, CNTFET, memristor, and other devices and processes are reviewed in this paper, providing some reference for the further research and developm… Show more

“…In addition, analogto-digital conversion seems to be more accurate in ternary logic systems while the ternary digital logic system can be backward compatible with the binary logic system. [47][48][49] Apparently, our PEC PD is naturally suitable for building ternary logic gates due to the bidirectional photoresponse. Using the positive and negative polarity of the photoresponses of our device, we constructed a three-value logic OR (TOR) gate with ternary inputs and ternary outputs, as schematically illustrated in Figure 6a.…”

“…It is worth noting that our ternary logic gates are based on balanced ternary logic (0, 1, -1) instead of unbalanced ternary logic (0, 1, 2), which has advantages in arithmetic operations. [48] Additionally, the operating mode of our ternary logic gate can also be changed by adjusting the light intensity, sacrificial reagents in the electrolyte, and loading metal particles. Such a device provides new insight and a strategy for the development of next-generation multi-mode optoelectronic devices in the pursuit of the high integration of optoelectronic logic circuits.…”

“…There are only few brief reviews of the design of ternary logic circuits in the literature [9,10]. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is not any particular review of ternary adders.…”

“…In the era of big data, the amount of data is growing explosively, and as a result, digital logic systems are having difficulty in processing such huge amounts of data while striving for ever-increasing efficiency [1]. To meet the demand of data processing speed and power efficiency, ternary logic has received recent attention due to its advantages of higher single-line information carrying capacity and additional logical functions [2][3][4][5][6][7]. Compared to the binary digital signal, each bit of the ternary digital signal contains more information, resulting in a higher transmission rate at the same frequency.…”
