A Review on the Degradation Implementation for the Operation of Battery Energy Storage Systems

Abstract: A naive battery operation optimization attempts to maximize short-term profits. However, it has been shown that this approach does not optimize long-term profitability, as it neglects battery degradation. Since a battery can perform a limited number of cycles during its lifetime, it may be better to operate the battery only when profits are on the high side. Researchers have dealt with this issue using various strategies to restrain battery usage, reducing short-term benefits in exchange for an increase in lon… Show more

“…There are a number of metrics for battery usage that can impact the rate of degradation. 29 We focus on two of these degradation metrics: total accumulated charge and depth of discharge. These parameters are related to each other: batteries which completely discharge on each cycle require replacement after around 6000 cycles; 30 assuming a ten-year replacement cycle, this allows slightly less than 2 cycles per day.…”

“…28 Battery charging/discharging efficiency is set at 95% for similar reasons. 29 Having accounted for the costs of calendar aging and a standard amount of cycling aging, the model then imposes constraints which prevent high frequency usage from degrading the batteries faster than anticipated. There are a number of metrics for battery usage that can impact the rate of degradation.…”

“…The ES degradation is an inevitable issue in battery technologies [71]. The degradation depends on different factors such as the type of the battery, the temperature, the charge/discharge cycles, and the depth of discharge (DOD).…”

“…In this study, authors seek to evaluate the impacts on costs when a company electrifies the fleet using PV generation and a BESS. For this study, battery degradation [35,36] has not been considered as part of the economic analysis; however, due to its relevance on costs, battery degradation is being considered as part of future research.…”
