Adsorption modeling is important to understand and predict both how water contamination occurs, and how it might be prevented or remediated. Surface complexation models (SCM) help us understand adsorption under changing environmental conditions. This computational class introduces undergraduate students to adsorption and surface complexation and provides a foundation in geochemical modeling using freely available PHREEQC software from USGS. Practical capabilities are developed by (1) performing aqueous speciation reactions, (2) determining the surface charge of suspended metal oxide/mineral powders using potentiometric titration data, (3) calculating pH adsorption edges and adsorption isotherms, (4) applying PHREEQC to answer possible water treatment scenarios, and (5) using Visual Basic coding with loops to generate large data sets. This class is contextualized around arsenic contaminated groundwater and its treatment using iron oxide minerals, with hundreds of millions at risk worldwide (e.g., India, Bangladesh, Mexico). Participants report increases in their understanding of adsorption chemistry and confidence in the application of geochemical models to perform predictive SCM calculations.

A low-cost adsorbent was prepared by using cherry stones powder and chitosan and used to retain Reactive Black 5 dye from aqueous solution. Then, the spent material was submitted to a regeneration process. Five different eluents (water, sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride and ethanol) were tested. Among them, sodium hydroxide was selected for an advanced investigation. Values of three working conditions, namely the eluent volume, its concentration and the desorption temperature, were optimized by Response Surface Methodology-Box–Behnken Design. In the established settings (NaOH volume: 30 mL, NaOH concentration: 1.5 M, working temperature: 40 °C), three successive cycles of adsorption/desorption were conducted. The analysis performed by Scanning Electron Microscopy and by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy revealed the evolution of the adsorbent throughout the dye elution from the material. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich equilibrium isotherm were able to accurately describe the desorption process. Based on the acquired results, our outcomes sustain the suitability of the synthesized material as dye adsorbent and the possibility of efficaciously recycling and reusing it.

The emerging contaminant 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) has been shown to have harmful effects on the environment and human health. These contaminants present a critical challenge in water remediation. Herein, a magnetic composite composed of silica-coated magnesium ferrite nanoparticles and glutaraldehyde-cross-linked polyethylenimine polymer (i.e., MgFe2O4@SiO2/GA-PEI composite) was synthesized to use as an effective adsorbent for the removal of 2,4-D. The successful preparation of the MgFe2O4@SiO2/GA-PEI composite using the optimal synthesis condition was confirmed through XRD, TGA-DTG, FTIR, zeta potential analysis, solid-state 13C NMR, TEM, SEM, EDS, VSM, and organic functional group tests. The adsorption behavior of 2,4-D by this composite was systematically investigated. The results showed that the MgFe2O4@SiO2/GA-PEI composite exhibited not only pH-dependent adsorption behavior but also an ultrahigh adsorption capacity (∼1631 mg g–1) for 2,4-D. The efficient adsorption of 2,4-D is due to the large numbers of functional groups (i.e., hydroxy and amines) in the obtained composite. Furthermore, the electrostatic interaction between the composite and 2,4-D molecules significantly influenced the adsorption behavior. The reusability test indicated that the MgFe2O4@SiO2/GA-PEI composite revealed the effective adsorption of 2,4-D after five adsorption–desorption cycles. This newly designed heterogeneous magnetic hybrid composite provides a unique foundation to perform ultrahigh removal capacity, easy separation, and reusability for harmful pesticide 2,4-D in water remediation.
