A review on research of fire-induced progressive collapse on structures

Abstract: Purpose This paper delineates a literature review on fire-induced progressive collapse on structures and the effect of high temperature on structures and elements. After the occurrences of fire in the World Trade Center in the USA, the researchers started concentrating on the progressive collapse that happens due to high temperature. Currently, most of the researchers are working on fire-induced progressive collapse on structures using high-temperature behavior on materials which are used for construction. The… Show more

“…Many analytical and experimental research works have been conducted in this area. However, facts tell us that the number of people who lose their lives is not due to the direct effect of the earthquake but to indirect effects such as fire, among many other things [1]. Hence, it is crucial that the materials used in building construction can withstand a fire for a certain period of time.…”

“…The failure of a single structural element may trigger the failure of an entire structure. This phenomenon is termed progressive collapse (Murugan and Srinivasan, 2021; Parthasarathi et al ., 2022; Vishal and Satyanarayanan, 2021). While designing as well as during construction, columns and beams were given the most priority compared to any other structural member.…”

“…Concrete has high durability and serviceability, which favors its massive usage in the construction industry. There are several factors that affect the durability and serviceability of concrete, and one such concern is fire [1,2]. Whenever a concrete structure is subjected to fire accidents, concrete undergoes the effects of high temperatures.…”

“…Whenever a concrete structure is subjected to fire accidents, concrete undergoes the effects of high temperatures. Concrete undergoes both physical and chemical changes when it is subjected to high temperatures [2,3]. The concrete structures' ability to carry loads decreases as a result of exposure to fire conditions.…”
