A Review on Phytochemical and Pharmacological Profile of Portulaca Oleracea Linn. (Purslane)

Abstract: Portulaca oleracea belongs to the family of Portulacaceae in the traditional system of medicine and consists of large number of various medicinal and pharmacological importances hence represents a priceless tank of new bioactive molecules. Portulaca oleracea consists of number of pharmacological activities like antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, neuronal, antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activity. This review helps to create an interest in Portulaca oleracea in developing new formulations with more… Show more

“…Convincing reports have proven the antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic effects of purslane compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and polysaccharide‐like fibers (Chowdhary, Meruva, & Elumalai, ; Zarei, Ashtiyani, Rasekh, Mohammadi, & Jabary, ). In line with this, Liese et al () reported that intake of dietary fibers are inversely related to hyperglycemia and insulin resistance.…”

“…Previous trials have suggested that anthropometric measurements, liver enzymes, glycemic indices, and lipid profile can be the best predictors of NAFLD (Reid, 2001). In recent years, the effect of purslane intake on several pathologic conditions (e.g., type 2 diabetes, obesity with dyslipidemia in adolescents, and abnormal uterine bleeding) has been investigated Convincing reports have proven the antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic effects of purslane compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and polysaccharide-like fibers (Chowdhary, Meruva, & Elumalai, 2013;Zarei, Ashtiyani, Rasekh, Mohammadi, & Jabary, 2011). In line with this, Liese et al (2005) reported that intake of dietary fibers are inversely related to hyperglycemia and insulin resistance.…”

“…Some of these biomolecules, namely phenolic constituents are also able to promote cardiovascular function, mainly acting as anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive agents, at same that reduce the human cancer risk (Ramadan et al, 2017). Linked with these effects, anti-atherogenic, anti-hyperlipidemic, and hepatoprotective benefits may be also reached, at same time that pronounced improvements in kidney and nervous system have been stated (Chowdhary, Meruva, Naresh, & Elumalai, 2013). Furthermore, promising antispasmodic, anti-arthritic, antidiabetic, antiseptic, diuretic, antimicrobial, vermifuge, tonic and febrifuge potentialities have been also reported, besides their unquestionable action as an immunomodulatory agent (Chen, Li, Zhang, Xia, & Zhang, 2016).…”

“…Purslane contains vitamins as well as nutritive minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium, and calcium. Purslane also contains potent antioxidants and anti-mutagenic agents including betalain alkaloid pigments and the yellow betaxanthins [17] as well as flavonoids (kaempferol, apigenin, myricetin, portulacanones A, B, C and D), alkaloids (opleraceins A, B, C, D and E), fatty acids, terpenoids (portuloside A and B), polysaccharides, and vitamins [18]. …”
