A review on model updating of joint structure for dynamic analysis purpose

Abstract: Abstract. Structural joints provide connection between structural element (beam, plate etc.) in order to construct a whole assembled structure. There are many types of structural joints such as bolted joint, riveted joints and welded joints. The joints structures significantly contribute to structural stiffness and dynamic behaviour of structures hence the main objectives of this paper are to review on method of model updating on joints structure and to discuss the guidelines to perform model updating for dyna… Show more

“…Experimental modal analysis (EMA) or sometimes called as modal testing, is the process of extracting dynamic characteristics of a system, machinery or structure experimentally [19]. Confirmation for the accuracy of a result obtained in finite element analysis is usually validated by EMA [20][21][22].…”

“…In order to reduce the existing discrepancies, model updating procedure was implemented on the finite element model of dissimilar plate structure, hence improves the model to have better correlation with the actual structure. There are dual approaches of model updating which are direct method and sensitivity method [19]. Model updating will be performed as an optimization technique and being presented by the structural optimization capability [24][25][26][27].…”

“…However, the predicted result from initial FE model of the bolted joined structure is often found to be inconsistent with the experimental data. This is due to the input data of the initial FE model are made based on nominal value [7][8][9][10]. On top of that, the factors of over simplification on the jointed properties such as local geometry features, boundary conditions and inaccurate of joints modelling also affects the quality of the developed FE model.…”

“…Thus, it is important to understand the dynamic behaviour of a jointed structure due to laser welding so that the dynamic behaviour of the overall automotive structure can be predicted accurately [4][5][6][7][8]. However, to numerically model the structure jointed by laser welding for finite element (FE) analysis is very difficult, challenging and time consuming due to the involvement of uncertainties that are produced during the joining process, such as frictional damping, localised stiffness and heat affected zone (HAZ) on the joint itself [9][10][11][12][13]. There are several researches regarding the employment of suitable element connector to represent laser weld joints.…”
