A review on microbiological decontamination of fresh produce with nonthermal plasma

Abstract: Summary Food safety is a critical public health issue for consumers and the food industry because microbiological contamination of food causes considerable social and economic burdens on health care. Most foodborne illness comes from animal production, but as of the mid‐1990s in the United States and more recently in the European Union, the contribution of fresh produce to foodborne outbreaks has rapidly increased. Recent studies have suggested that sterilization with nonthermal plasma could be a viable altern… Show more

“…Similarly numerous studies dealing with plasma sterilization generated at atmospheric, medium or low pressure have shown the same results [6, 8, 14, 33, 39]. However different curve profiles, such as single-slope curve or triphasic curve can be observed in other studies [7, 13, 21, 4042]. Taking into consideration the current literature, different factors influence the efficiency of plasma which are inherent to microorganisms ( e .…”

“…In water treatment plants, large-scale application might improve effectiveness further to achieve the same degradation effects in a shorter period. Previous studies demonstrated that powerful disinfection using cold plasma in fresh produce can be achieved without generating extra heat and destruction of food quality [23,52,53,54]. Moreover, the cold plasma did not require any reagents beyond air and water, therefore it is a green technology without generation of harmful waste and unwanted byproducts.…”

“…Currently, atmospheric pressure nonthermal plasmas have been proven to be feasible tools for flow control, [1][2][3] surface modification of materials, [4][5][6][7] decontamination of surfaces, [8,9] and cancer treatment. [1,10] Atmospheric pressure plasmas are an important topic for flow control, where electrical discharge exhibits significant effects in the flow.…”
