A review on micro-milling: recent advances and future trends

Abstract: Recently, mechanical micro-milling is one of the most promising micro-manufacturing processes for productive and accurate complex-feature generation in various materials including metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. The micro-milling technology is widely adapted already in many high-tech industrial sectors; however, its reliability and predictability require further developments. In this paper, micro-milling related recent results and developments are reviewed and discussed including micro-chip removal … Show more

“…With an increase in the radius of the cutting edge about the thickness of the cut layer, the deformation area of the workpiece increases, and as a result, the force load on the tool tooth increases [31]. Cutting forces have a great influence on the chip formation nature, the process of material cutting, vibration characteristics of cutting, the integrity of the cutting tool, and the surface quality [59][60][61][62]. Additional surface treatment by fast atoms will reduce the cutting edge radius and prepare surfaces for the deposition of a wear-resistant coating while providing a relatively smaller radius of the cutting edge than when coating the surface without preparation of this kind.…”

“…30 Moreover, based on scientific literature, relatively few publications deal with the micro-milling of these difficult-to-cut materials. 31,32 Therefore, and due to the excellent properties such as excellent hot tensile properties, high hot wear resistance, adequate toughness and heat checking resistance, hardened AISI H13 was chosen for our investigation. Moreover, the corrosion resistance of the injection moulding tools can be also a critical property, therefore Böhler M303 was chosen as second workpiece material for the experiments.…”

Efficient machining of hardened steel is a great challenge; 36 moreover, recently, the role of sustainable and eco-friendly machining is highly growing, 31,37 therefore optimising the process could be of utmost importance in many cases. 3335,38 Abbas et al.…”
