A review on methods for predicting miRNA–mRNA regulatory modules

Abstract: Identification of complex interactions between miRNAs and mRNAs in a regulatory network helps better understand the underlying biological processes. Previously, identification of these interactions was based on sequence-based predicted target binding information. With the advancement in high-throughput omics technologies, miRNA and mRNA expression for the same set of samples are available. This helps develop more efficient and flexible approaches that work by integrating miRNA and mRNA expression profiles with… Show more

“…However, miRNAs may not contribute to SCI recovery through a single pathway. Many studies are now highlighting the role of complex regulatory networks among various noncoding RNAs in human diseases [48][49][50]. miRNA regulation through a single pathway may only be part of a large network, which may point the way to future research on non-coding RNAs.…”

“…7 Mounting evidence has demonstrated that the interplay between miRNA and mRNA, formed a complex network of interactions in gene-targeted regulation. 8 MiR-620 regulated FOXM1 and HER2 expression by inhibiting aerobic glycolysis, thus affecting ESCC development and metastasis. 9 Previous research indicated that miR-196a-5p could possess either tumor suppressive or oncogenic properties, with aberrant expression observed in multiple cancers such as cervical cancer and endometrial cancer.…”

“…MiRNA typically binds to the 3′‐untranslated region (3′‐UTR) of its target messenger RNA (mRNA), resulting in a reduction in mRNA translation or degradation of mRNA transcripts 7 . Mounting evidence has demonstrated that the interplay between miRNA and mRNA, formed a complex network of interactions in gene‐targeted regulation 8 . MiR‐620 regulated FOXM1 and HER2 expression by inhibiting aerobic glycolysis, thus affecting ESCC development and metastasis 9 .…”

“…MiRNAs are involved in several mechanisms of tumor development and progression, acting as both oncogenes and tumor suppressors, depending on the type of cell and tissue [ 4 , 5 ]. In addition, a given miRNA can regulate multiple targets, and a single target can be regulated by multiple miRNAs, showing the intricate and complex interaction between miRNA and mRNA pairings [ 6 ].…”
